Google Search, SEO and Ecommerce Statistics 2014
We thought it would be interesting and helpful to have a quick set of the latest 2013 and 2014 search and ecommerce statistics for the UK and beyond.
- There were 2.2 trillion searches on Google globally over the course of 2013.
- On average this is equates to 5,922,000,000 (almost six billion) searches a day.
- 89% of searches in the UK are made through the world’s number one search engine Google.
- Google’s market share dipped in 2014, meaning perhaps competitors such as Bing and Russia’s Yandex could receive higher volumes of every day searches during the course of 2014.
- Global 2013 Google search statistics were up by a significant 287 billion over the course of the year, it will be interesting to see if this spike continues in the annual search statistics in 2014 due to the increase in competitors market share, and the refining of mobile search.
- In 2013 the top 25 brands searched on Yandex, the top Russian search engine, were all overseas fashion brands. (econsultancy)
What is the share of PPC search compared to SEO / Natural search?
- Overall 94% of searches go to natural search in the UK, with only 6% of successful clicks going to paid search results.
- Increased PPC Spend in 2013 did not necessarily yield more impressions. In the US over the course of 2013, paid search spend was up by 34.1%. Contrastingly impressions only rose by 12.5% over the year.
- Interestingly the age demographic clicking on PPC search results are generally older; in fact 65% of people who clicked on PPC in 2013 in the UK were over 35 years old. Organic results therefore could be seen to reach a younger target audience.
What is the best position to be in in Google search results?
- When it comes to Google search results, 90% of users click on the first 3 results in Google. When it comes to SEO, it really is “in Google we trust”.
- However, click through rates in SEO are sector dependent. With searchers within airlines, broadcast media and finance and insurance sectors being the most likely to click on the top 3 search positions. These searchers are between 81%-93% likely to click on the first three results respectively.
- Different sectors experience different click through rate. In 2013 44% of search engine users looking for computers and electronics clicked through to positions lower the first three search results. This maybe due to customers being more loyal to their electronics and gadgets providers or perhaps where there are a higher number of players with little brand recognition and so users will not shop from them, despite their high search positions.
- 2014 is the year of mobile web traffic; mobile or smartphone web traffic could overtake desktop web traffic as early as July of this year.
- 48.2% of all Western Europeans have accessed the internet using a mobile phone in the last month, and this number is growing according to 2014 MCommerce statistics. From this online mobile use data it can be predicted that 66% of people across all age groups will be using a mobile phone in 2017
- Mobile phones are more popular than toothbrushes: According to the Mobile Marketing Association, of the 7 billion people on the planet, 4.8 billion own a mobile phone, whereas only 4.1 billion own a toothbrush.
- Mcommerce is growing in all age groups, with 25-34 year olds expecting to use mobile shopping 15% more in 2014 than in 2013.
- Even email usage is moving to mobile only viewing, experiencing a 64% jump by halfway through 2013. Email marketing revenues generated through mobile grew by 52% compared with 18% for email marketing revenues generated on desktops.
